Your products need effective packaging so they won’t break in transport, but manufacturers can make good decisions to reduce the harmful effects of the materials used. We measure whether recycled materials were used in the packaging (what goes in), what percentage of the package is easily recyclable by the end consumer (what goes out), and whether any raw materials used were certified by a reputable environmental agency.

Ultimately, the longer a product lasts, the less impactful the environmental cost of creation is over time. We love companies that offer warranties on their products as it incentivizes them to create goods that will last a long time and not have to be replaced (at a cost to them), but in the absence of a warranty we look to the tensile or compressive strength of primary materials.
